Snookered by the jaw

Postby Roger Dalitz » Wed Apr 22, 2009 6:22 pm

If you are snookered by the jaw, and i force the cueball thru the jaw to hit the ball , isn't that a push shot, therefore a foul.
Had this discussion with a refferee at the u/21 's , he said no.

Depends what you mean by "force the cue ball through the jaw" - can you give a more detailed description?

In this instance i place the cueball so i was snookered by the jaw, this shot i am reffering to is the length of the table on the diagonal, got the refferee to check that it was snookered, grabbed a racki and hit the ball snookered no problems, just by using force.
His explaination was i was only squeezing the rubber .
I said i would not play that shot becauce i think it is a push shot, and would be like cheating. 8) 8) 8)

Don't think so I'm guessing that push shot would only comply to a movable object example a ball not a cushion or jaw. 8)

Ok, so maybe I forgot about this one...

A push stroke is made when the tip of the cue remains in contact with the cue-ball after the cue-ball has commenced its forward motion

So the question is, when the cue ball is squeezing against the cushion, has it started moving?

Was it actually touching the cushion to begin with? If not then it leads to a double contact pretty easily, unless you've got very good cue control. If it was touching, then it comes down to how much of a squeeze you're putting onto the cushion.

I'd still need to see it played in a game, then I'll give you my decision ;)

Wouldn't this make deep screw shots a push shot?

In theory, yes - but what shows up on high speed film is often very different to how we perceive it. The rules are written on the basis of human perception...for now...

here's something funny that actually happened the other day.

Player A is snookered by the jaw, he comes off 1 cushion and just misses the object ball. referee calls "foul and a miss", players A asks "why?", referee says "a jaw snooker isn't a real snooker as you're not snookered by a ball, therefore you must hit the object ball".

And then the player took out his rule book and bashed the referee about the head with it?

The rule says nothing about being snookered, it says "a clear path in a straight line"
